Matthew Ruff, Top Domestic Violence Lawyer 310-527-4100

Domestic Violence charges are unique because the accuser is a person you have a relationship with. Although it may seem these charges can be easily resolved, quite the opposite is true. Prosecutors get tough on these charges and you need a tough DEFENSE ATTORNEY who has been around to fight for you.

An arrest for a DV crime can result in loss of liberty, gun rights, and professional license implications. In recent years we have seen a marked increase in domestic violence related arrests. These arrests usually arise out of a simple dispute between husband and wife, domestic partners or boyfriend/girlfriend. These incidents are often blown way out of proportion by police called out to help. Unfortunately, most people discover that the police are not there to help at all and typically feel compelled to take one of the persons in to custody at which time bail is set and the individual languishes in jail pending an appearance before an unsympathetic Judge.

RECENT CASE SUCCESS: Matt was hired by the family of a auto mechanic arrested for spousal abuse inside his home after his estranged wife reported she had been attacked 4 days earlier. She accused him of strangling her and threatening to kill her after she was caught cheating. Since the incident allegedly occurred in Rancho Palos Verdes the charges were brought in the Torrance Court. Matt investigated the allegations and came to the conclusion they were false and made up in an attempt to gain an advantage in future divorce proceedings. Notwithstanding his findings the DA refused to drop the charges. Undeterred, Matt set the case for trial and on the date set to begin the District Attorney dismissed the case in its entirety September 2017.

Mr. Ruff was retained in a case out of Gardena where the police were called out after a couple became involved in a physical altercation outside a business they owned. The alleged victim asserted she was choked and her arm was twisted. Officers observed evidence of an assault. Matthew contended the incident evolved from an argument that started when the alleged victim accused the client of infidelity and she was angry and actually attacked him whereupon he was simply acting in self defense and restrained her to prevent further injury to himself. Client was arrested for PC 273.5, he bailed out and was given a date to appear in the Torrance Court. This case was dropped in September of 2016.

In another incident, Matthew was hired by a client in Long Beach California on July 26, 2016 for allegations of domestic violence following an altercation where the woman sustained an injury to her cheek during a scuffle. The client claimed he was simply trying to leave the residence when his girlfriend fought with him trying to keep him from leaving. Matt got on the phone immediately with the prosecutor and submitted information, including a statement from the alleged victim. Within days a decision was made to drop all charges and the client never had to go to Court.

PC 243e1 charges dismissed in Torrance Court on March 4, 2014, here are the facts of the case: Client was arrested by a Beach city cop after his live-in girlfriend called 911 alleging that she was struck during a verbal argument about a car. The officer on scene concluded the male party was the aggressor even though he had called the police on her previously for attacking him. The prosecution would not drop the charges when the complaining witness recanted her story, in fact they wanted jail time and a 52 week DV counseling program. The accused then hired Matthew Ruff who appeared in Court and subsequently was able to have the entire case dismissed 45 days later.

No one will argue that a true crime of domestic violence is horrific and unacceptable at any level, however, all too often a wife, husband, girlfriend, boyfriend, etc. will make false claims of abuse for any number of reasons. Some false accusations stem from a divorce proceeding or an attempt to get custody of a child, some originate from anger, revenge or even greed. No matter what the reason, a false claim of domestic abuse is just as unacceptable and should be fought with vigor. Attorney Matthew Ruff has nearly 20 years experience doing just that.

If you or someone you know has been arrested for the crime of domestic violence (including Penal Code 273.5, 243(e)(1), 242, 594 and 245)it is important to get the help af an experienced criminal defense Lawyer as quickly as possible.

Domestic Violence Charges can be as simple as a misdemeanor or as serious as a felony. California Law treats those arrested for this type of crime very differently than if the person were involved in an incident with a stranger or someone they are not related to or involved in a relationship. The bail on these types of cases is intentionally higher and other conditions such as protective orders are often imposed even before the case gets to Court.

The police will usually "take sides" when responding to a domestic violence call and soon become biased based upon their own beliefs and life experiences. It is not uncommon for a law enforcement officer to automatically presume that the male involved a fight was the aggressor and therefore is often the only person arrested and taken to jail. In these situations, the police report will many times be fraught with one sided, exaggerated information which will be viewed by the District Attorney.

A Lawyer experienced with Domestic Violence Charges can cut thru the bull and work towards getting the criminal charges dropped or dismissed in Court. Attorney Matthew Ruff has personally handled hundreds of cases involving domestic violence allegations including: spousal abuse (PC273.5), battery on a domestic partner (PC243(e)(1), criminal threats (PC422), vandalism, ADW (PC245), trespass, stalking, sexual assault, among many others.

When you need a Lawyer to FIGHT for you, call criminal defense attorney Matthew J. Ruff, he is in your corner. Mr. Ruff has consistently been able to get dismissals in cases involving domestic violence. His track record at trial has also been stellar, unlike many lawyers who talk about going the distance for their clients, Mr. Ruff has gone in front of the jury at trial on many cases where his clients have been charged with criminal DV charges and he has never lost. In one recent case his client was accused of inflicting severe injury to his wife during a physical confrontation. Despite graphic photographs of facial bruises and contusions, Mr. Ruff was able to convince the jury that the case was self defense and the jury acquitted his client. In yet another case, Matthew convinced a Los Angeles jury that his client was not guilty of felony criminal threats, spousal abuse, and assault with a caustic chemical in spite of testimony from a third party witness and evidence that his client confessed to police.

Although a legal defense can often be mounted in domestic violence cases, we understand that many folks do not want to take the case to jury trial and litigate. As such, the lawyer can very often acquire enough exculpatory evidence and mitigating facts to persuade the prosecutor to allow a dismissal of the charges. This can often involve counseling, community service, restitution, etc. This type of Court disposition is usually favored by many wishing to reconcile with the other side. A dismissal will also help to minimize long term consequences a domestic violence conviction might bring such as loss of professional licenses, immigration issues, future custody determinations, among others.

Why hire Matthew Ruff as your Lawyer?

He has nearly 20 years experience defending domestic violence charges. He has handled well over 2000 (two thousand) criminal cases, criminal defense is all he does and he does it well. He goes to trial when necessary to get charges dropped -not just plea bargain- when the case warrants it. He uses the most experienced investigators and experts to defend his clients. Because of his successful jury trial results he has the respect and credibility to resolve cases with the District Attorney, in some cases before the case even gets to Court.

In one recent case, Matthew was hired by a client charged with a PC 243e1 in Redondo Beach California. The client had been represented by another lawyer who was encouraging the client to take a deal and plead guilty. The client retained Mr. Ruff and the case was immediately set for trial. Matthew filed a number of legal pleadings and the case was thrown out within 30 days of being hired. According to Matthew, "too many lawyers roll over and play dead" when it comes to defending domestic violence cases nowadays. The bottom line is that many good people are thrown into a cold criminal justice system that is incompassionate and cruel. Many of these folks are truly "not guilty" of the crime and simply cave in when they do not see their attorney fighting for them.
